Gurdies

Gurdies are a type of stringed musical instrument that are categorized as wheel fiddles. They produce sound by using a rotating wheel that rubs against the strings, similar to how a bow is drawn across strings in traditional string instruments. The player turns a crank to create the rotation, which in turn causes the strings to vibrate and produce music. Gurdies typically have at least one melody string and one or more drone strings, allowing for the simultaneous playing of melody and accompaniment. They are most commonly associated with folk music traditions in Europe and have seen a resurgence in popularity among folk and early music enthusiasts. The instrument’s distinctive sound and playing technique make it unique within the realm of string instruments.
